Piedmont College is a private liberal arts institution in Demorest, which is a city in the US state of Georgia, comprised within Habersham County, with a small population of just nearly 1500 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.
Piedmont College was established in September, 1897, to serve residents of the Appalachian area of northeast Georgia. The college first started at J.S. Green Collegiate Institute, getting its name from a local banker, but, in 1899, the name was shortened to J.S. Green College, and, by 1902, it was formally renamed Piedmont College.
Piedmont currently offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to approximately 2000 students from across the state and the world, through 4 schools, which are: the School of Arts and Sciences, the Walker School of Business, School of Education and the Daniel School of Nursing.
Piedmont's athletic teams are known as the Lions and they compete in NCAA Division III, in Great South Athletic Conference. Their distinctive colors are dark green and gold.
Among Piedmont College's noteworthy graduates, we also find: Johnny `Big Cat` Mize - baseball Hall of Famer, Phillip M. Landrum - U.S. Congressman, and Diana Palmer - author of many novels including `Diamond Girl`, which was made into a movie in 1998.
